Category 2 is a special tax status for wealthy people who move to Gibraltar. However much you earn worldwide, you pay income tax on only the first £118,000, so your tax bill is capped.

What you pay

Amount
Income taxedFirst £118,000 only
Minimum tax a year£37,000
Maximum tax a year£42,380

The maximum works out at about £3,532 for each month your certificate is in force.

Who qualifies

To get a Category 2 certificate you must:

  • Have a high net worth. In June 2026 the Government said the minimum for new applicants would go up to £5 million, from £2 million. It takes effect when the Category 2 rules are amended. People who already hold Category 2 status keep it under the old rules.
  • Have approved accommodation. You need a home in Gibraltar, bought or rented, that's approved for Category 2 and kept for your exclusive use all year.
  • Have private medical insurance.
  • Not have lived in Gibraltar recently. You can't have been resident here in the five years before you apply.

There's no fixed number of days you have to spend in Gibraltar each year.

Finding an approved home

Not every property can be used for Category 2. Use the Category 2 only filter when you search on GibMove to see homes that qualify, and ask the agent to confirm the approval before you commit.
